Day 11 : Bronze age for France.
Day 11 : Bronze age for France.
France is now 6th in the medal tables with 28 medals as wrestler Guénot and gymnast Sabot gave their country two new bronze medals.
Top of the day : Steeve Guénot
In 2008, French wrestler Steeve Guenot received a gold medal and now he has once again stepped on the podium done by easily beating the 2011 World bronze medallist Pedro Mulens of Cuba in the 66 kg category. Guenot made the headlines in Beijing at the age of 22, as he gave France its first gold medal at the 2008 Games and became the first Olympic Champion for France in Men's Greco-Roman Wrestling since 1936. That was all the more noticeable because his brother Christophe also won a bronze medal in the -74 kg category that same day.
Flop of the day : French women’s handball team
Against all odds, France was stunned by newcomer Montenegro in the quarterfinals of the London Olympics women’s handball competition. French coach Olivier Krumbholz’s girls were leading 17-14 when Montenegro's Katarina Bulatovic scored from the penalty spot in the final second to defeat France 23-22. Team France was favourite to win a medal in the women's handball event, but despite their talented players, their performance was not consistent enough to beat Montenegro.
Number of the day : 2
The last two French boxers still in the competition were defeated in controversial decisions. Alexis Vastine and Nordine Oubaali seemed to have won their fights, but the judges decided otherwise, giving Ukrainia’s Taras Shelestyu and Ireland’s Michael Conlan a ticket to the semi-finals ending the French fighters’ remarkable campaign. Four years ago in Beijing Alexis Vastinehad left the Olympic ring in a fury after two controversial final-round penalties cost him victory. Something is definitely going wrong with boxing rules.
Tomorrow's highlight : Mathieu Goubel, Sprint C1.
