The Architectural Association, a private institution, has a worldwide reputation as a centre of avant-garde architectural thought. Among its graduates are such influential figures as Sir Richard Rogers (designer of Lloyds of London and the Pompidou Centre), Peter Cook (founder of Archigram and now head of the University of London's architecture school), Nicholas Grimshaw (the architect of the new Waterloo Terminal and 1994 RIBA gold medallist), and Rem Koolhaas (author of Delirious New York, masterplanner of EuroLille and one of the shortlisted architects for the new Tate museum of modern art).
