In 1913, a young artist, Pierre, falls in love with a beautiful seamstress, but their romance is cut short when war breaks out and Pierre is sent to fight on the front. Released on the eve of WWII, the film's theme of love interrupted by war struck a chord with contemporary audiences. Recalled Truffaut, of a 1939 screening: "The theater was full of uniformed soldiers on leave accompanied by their young wives or girlfriends.... The entire audience wept, hundreds of handkerchiefs piercing the darkness with little points of white. Never again was I to feel such an emotional unanimity in response to a film."
