Try To Remember

director: Zabou Breitman

"A humane, comedic love story about Claire (played by Isabelle Carré, winner of a Best Actress César for her performance), a shy woman in her early thirties who checks herself into a rural memory-loss clinic. Ever since the summer night when she was struck by lightning, she has become increasingly forgetful. The fact that her own mother died of Alzheimer's does nothing to alleviate her worries. But she is only 32 ... She slowly integrates herself into the at-once funny and sad world of memory-loss victims— including a pair of charming elderly Jewish men who insist they recognise a woman in the clinic from their days in a concentration camp. Then Claire and a fellow patient Philippe, who doesn't remember anything, not even love, fall for each other. They attempt to build a normal life together in this warm chronicle of two stray souls. Thanks to the doctor and the other patients, she learns to overcome her sickness. Acting is the key here: Carré and Campan provide the necessary charm and emotional range to carry the drama and the picture. First-time director and actress Zabou Breitman provides a solid and nuanced direction, successfully switching through different moods, preserving humour while tackling a grave subject with medical precision. Winner of a best first feature César in addition to Isabelle Carré’s accolade." (Ciné-Lumière/Institut Français)
