August 1944. On the streets of liberated Paris, de Gaulle triumphantly descends the Champs-Elysées. In his hands lies the arduous task of reviving a drained and lifeless country, no one for a moment questioning his authority. In several months however, unity forged under the Resistance shatters and quarrels break out. De Gaulle, little interested by political games tires of the infighting. On 20 January 1946 he brutally announces his resignation. How did events unfold following this starting decision? Le Grand Charles examines the history behind this great leader and how France subsequently dealt with the memories of war.
