What to wear on Christmas?

Que portez pour Noël? (En esperant que personne n'annulera Noël)

Christmas is just around the corner and parties are about to start. Every woman wants to stand out without blending in with the Christmas tree.

Christmas is a great occasion to look gorgeous and to pull out once more one of the fabulous dresses you might have bought last year in the sales and which are still hanging in your wardrobe... or to buy a new one.

Contrary to the French, the Brits really dress up for their Christmas parties. Gorgeous dresses for ladies and dinner jackets for men are usually the norm unless otherwise specified. What a challenge!

If you want to be glamorous you can wear noble matters such as silk, satin or cashmere. The safest bet remains the little black dress but then you might be amongst too many other little black dresses and you will not stand out against the a horde of men who will also be wearing black.

However, even a black dress can be made to look different when worn with the right accessories. A silk dress with some gold accessories and stilettos will always look perfect and classy. The length of the dress doesn't really matter that much but perhaps opt for opaque tights if it is on the short side. Much has been made of the new ranges of coloured and patterned tights and leggings on the catwalk but be warned: these are not the easiest things to pull off unless you are a nimble limbed 16 year old so approach with caution! I personally will choose some in darker plum or midnight blues to add a bit of interest to my outfit.

You can choose some colour items if you prefer. Both yellow gold and pearls have experienced a huge comeback and will go perfectly with either colour or black. Whether you are a modern and chunky kind of girl or more delicate and elegant in your choice of jewellery there is something out there to suit everybody. Go for Gothic  pearl and black diamonds as made by Theo Fennel to really rock up your outfit. I will be opting for Chanel's classic black cuff with pearl and yellow gold detailing as a perfect ofset to my black dress.

Looking to vamp up an old favourit? A bag or belt in the season's colours will definitely brighten up your outfit. This winter , yellow, forest fruits and, of course, gold are all versatile options.

As far as shoes are concerned stilettos are the safest bet . However you could choose low boots or boots to be more rock and roll, or richelieu to get a kind of aristocratic style. Don't wear high heels if you can't walk with them.

You can also be more audacious in choosing your dress, provided that you feel good in it and you wear it "nude". That means with no accessories or just a few, with discreet make up and free hair. Our rule of thumb is, don't go for a look you wouldn't normally choose at an other point in the year. This will ensure that you will a) feel comfortable and sexy throughout the evening b) that you won't splash out on yet another "christmas dress" that will never again see the light of day after the 25.

You can be seduced by colourful dresses by Topshop or Les Petites. However, do be cautious about your colouring.

You can decide to look like a "femme  fatale" too by wearing, for instance, this Dolce Gabbana dress, more childish with some knots or more fashion with a fringe dress.

Keep your own style.

If you do not feel like wearing a dress, you can opt for skirts or trousers as well.

A pencil skirt with a blouse is always a simple and stylish option but heels are absolutely "de rigueur" for this outfit. You could opt for a classy 50s style as Carla Bruni or for a free working girl style like Salma Hayek: Classics are definitely back but you can wear it your way.

You have to be chic for Christmas but casual chic is also an option if you are attending a more low key affair.

Be cautious it's a very subtle choice and you have to be very aware of the fashion trends to be able to pull it off. Accessories are especially important.

We love the Maje and the Ba&sh outfits.

This fits perfectly for Christmas Eve, however you might have been invited to other receptions. For instance what's the dress code for an office party for Christmas?

Here is the key: You have to stay true to your company culture. In all cases, don't dress up too much: avoid obvious cleavage, especially during the day, bright colours or very high heels. If you want to show off, use accessories.

Last but not least, take care of details. You will need something warm, make sure it goes with your outfit. Be careful about your bra straps and your tights ( bring another pair with you)...

Take particularly care of you hair and make-up: it will make you stand out. Blow dries are a nice way too look your best and feel pampered, but avoid bouffant hairdoes as these will age you. Here are some ideas and some people to look up to.

First the French pleat which had came back on the catwalks. As classy as possible. However be careful, it has to be a little ruffled if you want to avoid looking like a nun. Marion Cotillard wears this look to perfecrion.

If you have bobbed hair, you could go for Gwyneth's wavy chop

or a Louise Brook effect like Katie Holmes. Both are definitely modern and sexy.

If you have long-hair, you can opt for a deconstructed pony tail like Eva Longoria's do,  or an ultra straight blow dry such as the one Drew Barrymore has opted for.

As far as makeup is concerned, taking it softly is always the best option.

Brits DO NOT wear dinner jackets to Xmas parties. Only for really formal 'do's'.
