Adaptated from Joseph Conrad’s short story, The Return, Chéreau (La Reine Margot, Intimacy)’s new film boldly explores the operatic emotions hidden just below the surface of bourgeois decorum, and confronts head-on the perils and pitfalls of a stable marriage. Huppert’s performance is as fearless and intense as anything in her career (she was awarded a special Golden Lion in Venice last year for her performance), and Greggory’s chilling turn is a revelation of unraveled inner torment.
