A psychological thriller set in the world of the New York City ballet, this fifth feature from director Darren Aronofsky is also his most sensuous and accomplished. Natalie Portman is Nina, an experienced dancer who strives for perfection and for whom ballet is everything. She lives with her retired ballerina mother (Barbara Hershey), who is both zealously supportive and controlling of her daughter's singular ambition. Nina dreams of playing the lead in Swan Lake, and when the company prepares for a new production of the classic ballet, the artistic director (Vincent Cassel) decides to replace the prima ballerina, looking for someone who can combine the innocence of the White Swan with the eroticism and deception of the Black Swan. Nina is his first choice, but to succeed in the role she has to shed her inhibitions and reveal her darker, wilder side, and to convince him that she is a better choice than Lily (Mila Kunis), an impressive new dancer who oozes sexuality. Natalie Portman is outstanding as the driven but troubled Nina, and her increasingly fragile state of mind is imaginatively realised on screen. The demanding and competitive milieu of professional ballet provides the perfect setting to explore the film's complex psychological themes, and the ballet performances are breathtakingly filmed. Whilst subtly evoking films from Rosemary's Baby to The Red Shoes, this is a decidedly original work from an unfailingly exciting director.
