Wines for Easter
For the Aperitif
Aureus Cremant de Loire, 2002, £8.99.
Apples and almonds, slightly biscuity, creamy, this all comes from the 5 years ageing in bottle before release! There is also a zesty freshness. International Wine Challenge best of class."
To Buy
Lallier Champagne, Grand Cru, £24.99.
This uplifting Grand Cru champagne spends over 4 years maturing to reach this perfectly balanced, exquisite champagne that puts many better known producers to shame. Jancis Robinson just named it in her top 3 champagnes out of 88 top names she recently tasted blind.
To Buy
With Roast Lamb.
Chateau Rosseau De Sipian, Medoc 2000, £9.99, (on main buying page in Softisticated category).
"A classic example of really good Bordeaux, this comes from the exalted 2000 vintage that got everyone's knickers in a twist a few years ago and it's still tasting fantastic right about now. Soft, yet a bit broody, it's got a 'real red wine' feel about it that we love."
To Buy
Sidereal, Cachapoal, Chile, £12.99.
Made by a French family from Bordeaux who own Château Dassault in St Emillion (Grand Cru)- they set out to make the first Grand Cru Classe Bordeaux wine in Chile. It is very St Emillion in style and one of my personal favourites!
Both of these wines should speak for themselves. In fact any of the Fine Wine would be brilliant with Lamb, they are all 1st-5th growth wines.
Chateau Monbusquet, St Emillion 1998, £50, fine wine section. To Buy
Chateau Pavillion Rouge, Margaux 1995, £55, fine wine section. To Buy
For all the Chocolate
There is nothing French on the site that I think would be great with chocolate, so instead I will recommend these two things. I appreciate there is probably a law against mentioning Australian wine on a French website but it really can be very good.
With dark chocolate
Two Hands, Shiraz, Barossa, Australia, £13.99
It is seriously dark, brooding and intence. The 'two hands' are Michael Twelftree and Richard Mintz who have the clear objective of making the best possible shiraz within Australia. They succeeded with this one! PS this is an "en primeur" style offer, i.e. it should be considerably more, but we bought it early.
For Milk Chocolate
Devils Corner Pinot Noir Tasmania, Australia. £9.99.
This young devil is a cheeky, light hearted yet complex wine with rich undertones. Cherry red in colour with purple tinges it delivers ripe spicy plum aromas on the rip tide with the hidden undercurrent of ripe cherries blended with a hint of savoury flavour.
With Cheese
Turckheim, Grand Cru, Gewurztraminer, 2007. £15.99
The pinnacle of aromatics. It has a powerfully fragrant nose of rose petal, lychee and apricot with a hint of sweet spice. Rich pineapple flavours with spicy fruit and nice acidity
