‘Les Misérables’: from Page to Stage to Screen

26/01/2013 from 16:20 to 17:15

What accounts for the enduring popularity and appeal of Victor Hugo’s novel?

This thrilling story of love, sacrifice and redemption, written over one hundred and fifty years ago, still captures the imagination of readers and viewers as Tom Hooper’s adaptation of Les Misérables has already been nominated for four Golden Globe Awards.

This screentalk adresses the issue of adaptation and will come back on Victor Hugo's life behind the novel. The panelists comprise Wiliam Nicholson, screenwriter for this film, John Owen-Jones, West End performer of Jean Valjean and Bradley Stephens, UK specialist on Hugo and adaptations of his work. Dave Calhoun, film editor at Time Out, will moderate this lively and entertaining discussion.

This event is presented by the Society of Friends of Victor Hugo in conjunction with Ciné Lumière, and is part of the international ‘Victor Hugo et Égaux’ Festival 2013.

The screentalk will take place Saturday 26 January at 4.20 pm at the Ciné Lumière.

The film will be projected at the Cine Lumière from Friday 25 January to Sunday 3 Febuary.
