director: Raymond Depardon

Depardon takes the cameras inside a Parisian court for this fascinating study of the French legal system. Filmed between May and July 2003, the film shows the trial and sentencing of 12 people accused of misdemeanours varying in severity from drink driving to the physical and mental abuse of a former lover. As the assortment of citizens – from immigrants, to pickpockets, artists and academics – come face to face with the formidable judge Michèle Bernard-Requin, a tough woman who has heard it all before, the result is a sometimes hilarious, often heartbreaking, always compelling snapshot of the human condition.
